Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina awards $152,558 in Spring Caritas Funding

The Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina recently awarded Caritas grants for the spring 2018 grant cycle. These grants bear the name of one of the guiding principles of the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine, in omnibus caritas, meaning “in all things charity.” Caritas grants are awarded to organizations meeting fundamental needs of individuals and families living in poverty in South Carolina. These organizations often act as a lifeline in their communities and provide valuable services to those they serve. In total, 50 organizations were awarded Caritas spring 2018 funding for a total of $152,558.00. These funds will assist these organizations in providing services to individuals and families in South Carolina. The Foundation is proud to announce their partnerships with the following recipients:
Backpack Buddies Seabrook Island
Funding will support this volunteer driven organization’s weekend backpack program that alleviates weekend food insecurity as well as improve attendance and classroom behavior. Charleston
Barrier Islands Free Medical Clinic
Funding will support their High Risk Disease Management Initiative which includes tracking and monitoring diabetic clinic and lab appointments, providing free diabetic monitoring supplies, and
education services through their comprehensive diabetes education program. Charleston
Camp Happy Days
Funding will support their Family Financial Assistance Program which provides aid to families during financial crisis to help families create a healthy, safe, and stable environment during the critical periods of a child’s cancer treatment. Statewide
Charleston Area Senior Citizens Services
Funding will support the “All are Welcome Breakfast Club” a daily healthy continental breakfast for homeless and low-income seniors in Charleston. Charleston
Charleston Jewish Federation
Funds will support Charleston Jewish Family Services. CJFS provides financial assistance for medical, housing, and utilities for clients who are among the most vulnerable members of the greater Charleston community. Charleston, Berkeley, and Dorchester
Christian Assistance Bridge
Funding will support the organization’s Emergency Assistance Fund providing monetary support to cover utility bills, medical bills, car repairs, rent, and other immediate needs in times of crisis. Richland and Fairfield
Circle of Hope Ministries
Funds will be used to aid Street Outreach programming to the homeless providing food, clothing, toiletries, backpacks, transportation services and temporary lodging in emergency situations. Beaufort, Jasper, and Hampton
Columbia Oral Health Clinic
COHC is the only oral health clinic specifically serving the uninsured HIV/AIDS population in South Carolina, and one of the few in the nation. Funding will support their expanded denture program. Richland, Clarendon, Fairfield, Lexington, and Sumter
Cooperative Ministry
Funding will support Cooperative Ministry’s Autos for Opportunities program that addresses transportation-related barriers to securing living-wage employment. Richland and Lexington
Dorothy Day Soup Kitchen
Founded in 1986, the Dorothy Day Soup Kitchen was established to provide a safe, comfortable place and a free hot meal to anyone who walks through the door. Funding will provide operational support. York
East Cooper Faith Network
Funds will support the Network’s “Fix It!” program that provides essential home repairs and wheelchair ramps to help ensure safe living conditions for low income families through the coordination of skilled volunteers and community agencies. Charleston and Berkeley
East Cooper Meals on Wheels
ECMOW serves a largely low income population where poverty is generational. Funds will support healthy meals for seniors to ease the burden of having to choose between food, utilities, or medical bills. Charleston and Berkeley
EmmanuWheel
EmmanuWheel’s mission is to provide wheelchair ramps to mobility impaired individuals who cannot afford the cost of building materials and construction. Funding will go toward the purchase of building materials, tools, and building supplies. Lexington and Richland
Family Promise of Beaufort County Inc.
Funding will support their holistic programs that include providing temporary shelter, family stability and permanent housing solutions for homeless families with children by mobilizing resources from interfaith and secular communities. Beaufort and Jasper
Family Support Services of Horry County Inc.
Funding will support their Diaper Bank where clients can receive diapers, wipes, formula, and baby food along with infant, toddler, children’s and maternity clothing. Horry
Food Bank of Greenwood County
Funding will support their Weekend Backpack Program which provides prepacked nutritional bags of food distributed each Friday amongst 12 elementary and primary schools in District 50, 51 and 52. Greenwood
Free Medical Clinic of Aiken, Inc.
Funding will support the Clinic’s Dispensary of Hope program through which the clinic is able to quickly dispense life sustaining medications in their formulary throughout the year. Aiken
Friendship Medical Clinic and Pharmacy
Funding will support the purchase of medications not available through the Patient Assistance Program as well as cover the cost of lab work for patients. Horry
Greenville Free Medical Clinic
Funding will support the Greenville Free Medical Clinic’s nationally-recognized dental component that provides nearly $1 million worth of dental services to low-income uninsured patients each year. Greenville
Hands of Christ
Funding will support Hands of Christ’s Back to School Program that serves children in need by providing them with the basic necessities to be successful in school including uniforms and schools supplies. Berkeley, Charleston, Colleton, Dorchester, Laurens, Orangeburg, and Williamsburg
Harvest Hope Food Bank
Funding will help Harvest Hope’s Back Pack Child Feeding Program. Harvest Hope collaborates with various partners in order to provide weekend meals for children most in need who attend schools with high rates of free and reduced lunch. Help 4 Kids
Help 4 Kids is a volunteer-driven organization providing basic necessities to children living in poverty in Horry County. Funding will support their Backpack Buddies program which provides food each weekend to children who are referred by teachers and school counselors. Horry
Help 4 Kids Florence
Help 4 Kids Florence is in all five school districts and seven Head Start programs, providing bags of food each weekend to 2,200 food insecure children in 34 schools. Funding will be used for the direct purchase of food for the weekend bags. Florence
Helping Hand of Myrtle Beach
Helping Hand of Myrtle Beach is a short-term crisis intervention and referral agency whose mission is to provide immediate emergency assistance to those in need in the community. Funding will support their direct assistance to clients. Horry
Hopewell Senior Day Care Center
Hopewell Senior Day Care Center, located in Salters, SC provides healthcare, education, and intervention to senior citizens living in poverty. Funding will support the Hopewell Health Intervention and Educational Program. Williamsburg
Housing Development Corporation of Rock Hill
Funds will support Housing Development Corporation of Rock Hill’s rental assistance program through which those facing eviction within 60 days may request up to three months of assistance to alleviate the immediate threat of homelessness. York
ICNA Relief USA, Shifa Free Clinic
Funding will support the Clinic’s “Feed the Hungry” program comprised of a client food pantry, weekend food program for local elementary students, and Fresh Xpress giveaways. Charleston, Berkeley and Dorchester
James Island Outreach
James Island Outreach provides food, medicine, utility support, and emergency assistance to individuals and families in the community. Funding will support their client-choice pantry. Charleston
Lowcountry Furniture Bank
With their partners, LFB provides furniture and essential home items to homeless families who have secured housing. Funding will be used to purchase, deliver and set up a total of 60 twin beds for children. Charleston, Berkeley and Dorchester
Lutheran Social Services of the Greater Charleston Area
Lutheran Social Services of the Greater Charleston Area provides a framework for ecumenical, cooperative, voluntary action to serve all people in need. Funding will support dental access for uninsured & underinsured patients. Charleston, Berkeley and Dorchester
Meals on Wheels Bluffton-Hilton Head
Funding will support Meals on Wheels Bluffton-Hilton Head is a volunteer-driven organization that provides nourishing mid-day meals to homebound low-income clients who would otherwise not receive such a meal. Beaufort
MedNeed of SC
Funding will support MedNeed’s programming which accepts and delivers donations of quality medical equipment to the uninsured and indigent of South Carolina. Lexington and Statewide
Mercy Medicine Clinic
Funding will support costs associated with patients’ chronic disease management medications, life-sustaining medications, short-term acute illness medications, and dental pain and infection medications. Florence and Williamsburg
Mill Community Ministries
Funding will support Village Wrench whose mission is to transform under-resourced communities by empowering others through bicycle repair, bike earning, and cycling educational opportunities. Greenville
Neighbor to Neighbor of South Carolina
Funding will help support Neighbor to Neighbor of South Carolina’s (N2NSC) transit program which provides free transportation to low income homebound adults in Horry and Georgetown Counties. Horry and Georgetown
North Family Community School
Funding will support educational software and other resources needed for adult students working towards completing their GED. Orangeburg
Operation Sight
Funding will support Operation Sight’s work in restoring vision and improving the lives of low-income, uninsured individuals suffering from cataracts or urgent sight-threatening retinal disorders by providing the necessary medical treatment to these individuals at no cost. Charleston and Statewide
Richland County Court Appointed Special Advocates
Funding will be used to support the recruitment and training of over 100 additional volunteer guardians ad litem and serve 500 children represented by CASA volunteers. Richland
Second Helpings, Inc.
Funding will support general operating costs to ensure that Second Helpings is able to alleviate hunger by effectively and efficiently being a distribution channel between food donors and charitable food providers. Beaufort, Jasper and Hampton
Senior Centers of Cherokee County Inc
Funding will support the Free Medical Clinic of Cherokee County, SC whose goal is to provide free medical care for individuals who have no form of insurance or monetary ability to procure medical services. Cherokee
Senior Resources
Funding will support Meals on Wheels which provides a hot, nutritious noon-time meal to those who are unable to maintain an adequate, healthy diet due to transportation and financial constraints. Richland
Serve & Connect
Through transformative police-community partnerships, this funding will support the Compassionate Acts Program which focuses on providing assistance to individuals and families who are experiencing challenges associated with poverty. Richland and Lexington
Sistercare
Sistercare provides comprehensive services and advocacy for victims of domestic violence and their children. Funding will be used to support emergency shelter operations. Serving Fairfield, Kershaw, Lexington, Newberry, and Richland
Smith Medical Clinic
Funds will support Smith Medical Clinic’s operations to provide free medical care to low-income, uninsured residents of Georgetown County. Georgetown
The Children’s Council
Funding will support Lancaster Pride’s effort for intensive neighborhood transformation in a targeted neighborhood in Lancaster; 400 volunteers over the next 12 months will perform 1,200 hours of community service. Lancaster
The Salvation Army of the Midlands
Funding will support their Meals Service to the Homeless and Hungry Program which served over 400,000 meals last fiscal year. Richland
United Christian Ministries of Abbeville County
Funding will support their Emergency Assistance Ministry which offers crucial financial support to families in times of crisis. Abbeville
Vital Aging of Williamsburg County
Funding will support expenses associated with Vital Aging’s home-delivered meal program that provides nutritionally balanced meals and daily contact to elderly low-income residents of Williamsburg. Williamsburg
Volunteers in Medicine
Funding will support their Gift of Hope Program which leverages partnerships with physicians in the private sector, surgical centers, outpatient diagnostic centers and Hilton Head Hospital to provide clients with life-saving diagnostic procedures and surgeries. Beaufort and Jasper
York County Free Clinic
Funding will purchase glucose monitoring strips and meters, patient medications, and also support costs associated with patient transportation. York
